Independent Variables : Things we can do differently to change the outcome of the experiment ( The way we pull the balloon back to create a push force to push the marshmallow out of the cannon)

Dependent Variables :  Things we measure and find out what happened in the experiment ( What types of energy and forces that are involved in the cannon and also what energy that has been transferred)

Controlled Variables : Using the same balloon, Equipment, cup/toilet paper roll

Hypothesis :

I predict that the marshmallow would fly out of the cannon due to the balloon that we’re pulling back which creates an energy of elastic energy. That elastic energy turns into kinetic energy due to the marshmallow that is moving away from the cannon.

Method :

Equipment 

  • Cardboard tube (Toilet Paper Roll or Paper towel roll)
  • Balloon
  • Scissors
  • Small Marshmallows

Instructions : 

  1. Gather all of your equipment

  3.  Stretch the balloon on the big piece of the balloon
  4. Insert the balloon inside of the toilet paper roll Easy and Fun Paper Cup Party Popper Craft | Mombrite
  5. Add the Marshmallow inside of the toilet paper roll
  6. Pull the balloon like a slingshot and shoot it.

What Happened : 

We had a hard time putting the balloon into the paper roll because the balloon was breaking the paper roll when we were stretching the balloon.

What different kinds of energy were involved with the marshmallow cannon ?

Elastic Energy : Because of the balloon

Gravitational Potential Energy : When the marshmallow starts to drop because of the gravity.

Kinetic Energy : The movement of the marshmallow.

Heat energy : When the marshmallow was moving it made a bit of heat (because more movement = more energy = more heat energy.

What energy was transferred into a difference of energy during the experiment ? 

When I was pulling the back of the balloon, the energy stored there was elastic energy. Then the energy did work to the elastic energy to turn it into a different kind of energy, which is kinetic energy. The reason that it turns into kinetic energy is because the marshmallow is going to move out of the cannon and kinetic energy is associated with movement.

Potential Energy is energy that has been stored in an object that has potential to be a different kind of energy. There’s a different name for potential energy which is called chemical energy. The reason that they call it, is because the chemical energy mentions chemical bonds and chemical compounds that have been stored in an energy.

A different variation of potential energy that has been stored to an elastic object. The energy’s work is done when the elastic object has been extended or compressed. It gives off a push or pull force when you pull the elastic object back.

Kinetic Energy :

Kinetic Energy is energy that is associated with movements or objects in motion . If they transfer energy, a work is done into an object, the object moves faster and gets more powerful kinetic energy. It also have a chance to change to a different kind of energy.

Heat Energy :

Heat energy is the energy that is a flow of energy that has some heat to warm another cooler object. Everything has heat energy because of the movement of the particles inside of the matter. The coldest thing that we can reach in the universe is called Absolute zero and the temperature is -459.67 Fahrenheit or about -273.15 degrees. The reason this is the coldest thing we can possibly make, is because there’s no heat energy left.

A type of kinetic energy that has the power and ability to make objects have light that is visible to the human’s naked eye. It’s also a different type of electromagnetic radiation that has been produced by objects that have a lot of heat energy which means they have a lot of energy.

Sound energy that comes from different vibrations that is moving somewhere. It’s the result of a force from a sound or pressure that makes an object vibrate due to the different sound.

Gravitational potential energy is the energy that is stored in an object that is above the height of earth from the ground. the energy causes objects to fall to the ground because of gravity and another kind of potential energy.
